Shark Tank Pitch Night

Six finalists spanning four UCSF departments pitched their novel medical device concepts for hte chance to win up to $50,000 plus engineering and advising services in the fourth round of the Surgical Innovations Accelerator. MD/PhD student Adam Rao took home top prize and $50,000 for Tabla, a low-cost portable acoustic device for pneumonia detection. Teams led by Elaine Tseng, MD, professor in the adult cardiothoracic surgery division at the SF VA Medical Center, and Miles Conrad, MD, MPH, clinical professor in the division of interventional radiology, each earned $25,000 for their projects: a percutaneous retriever for transcatheter aortic valves (Tseng) and a device for gallbladder cryoablation (Conrad). Rao earned an additional $5,000 as the People's Choice awardee.
